Carbon Saving Obligation
The carbon saving obligation, an initiative by the UK government under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), ran until October 2018.
The latest iteration, known as the ECO4 scheme, uses its funding to assist low-income households. This funding specifically aids in covering the costs of cavity wall insulation and solid walls, which are typically more challenging to insulate.
Previously, the carbon saving obligation was referred to as the Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO).
Numerous energy companies have pledged their support to this government energy support program. Their objective? To aid low-income and vulnerable households grappling with fuel poverty. By participating, these companies not only assist households but also contribute to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions. Through the scheme, energy companies can implement energy-efficient measures, such as energy-saving heating systems, significantly reducing heating costs for those facing high energy bills.

Is it Possible to Apply for Funding if I Wasn't Previously Involved in the ECO3 or ECO2 Scheme?
Applications for the ECO scheme are open at any time. We’ve transitioned to the ECO4 phase, continuing the carbon saving obligation and carbon emissions reduction obligation, which succeeded the ECO 3 scheme from last April. Not being aware of this green deal scheme previously doesn’t preclude you from benefiting. If you qualify for the funding, you can apply whenever you’re ready.
Similar to the preceding ECO2 scheme, the ECO 3 grant concluded in March 2022. However, it was succeeded by ECO4, which introduced a new set of qualifying benefits to receive funding, among other alterations.

A significant portion of the UK’s housing stock comprises older buildings, posing challenges for treating cavity walls, solid walls, or inadequate loft insulation that no longer meets the Department of Energy’s district heating systems standard. The UK government’s carbon saving obligation funding is particularly aimed at addressing this issue in homes facing these challenges. If your home encounters these problems, here are compelling reasons to verify your eligibility today:
- More energy efficient
- Less expensive to heat your home
- Less expensive to insulate
By participating in this green deal, you stand to save substantial money while contributing positively to the environment. Why not consider applying?
